HOLE 6 - MOUNTAIN LAKE
This par three of infinite length, two hundred twenty down to seventy yards, is the water hole for all seasons and all players.
There are few ‘water holes’ on the links courses with which I was accustomed in England and Scotland and ever since I played the Jasper courses in the Canadian Rockies and was presented with a full water carry for the first time in my life, I have been fascinated by the idea of water and golf.
Sand is a hazard from which you can recover but once you’re in the water you are gone, or history as we say here in California. A full water carry as a business venture represents Victory with a
capital ‘V’ or if you don’t make it- a form of golfing bankruptcy. The timber walled edge to the green means you are on the green or off it.
This hole is versatile however and can be played almost as s a dry land hole and can be made so short as to make even the most timid player into a sort of tiger. I firmly believe that at least one hole per course should require a full water carry with an option to play short to a fairway also. This hole has both these choices.
The mounds behind the hole are the first symbols of The Montgomerie, Dubai and the green is receptive and friendly with only a few subtle folds to taunt the player if he gets too far away from the water.
