HOLE 5 - AL AIN
Another hole which salutes the nomadic nature of the Bedouin. The camel, the ship of the desert, as central to Arab life as is the horse to the American Indian, is regularly raced at Al Ain, the race track between Dubai and Abu Dhabi.
The humps on this relatively short par four represent the camel pack charging like the U.S. Cavalry. They make excellent hazards as do those behind the green. The wind, which varies from SSE morning moving clockwise to NNW in the afternoon, will affect this hole in different ways at different times of the day, but mostly as a crosswind.
The low incidence of bunkers at the green is a beginning tribute to the theme of this golf course which is friendship which is explained in more detail on hole#11. You have a tough recovery if you get among the ‘camels’ however. The curve on the fairway requires an interesting second. The green will accept a lofted wedge or a run up. The ‘camels’ behind can create a problem but if you hold the green you are rewarded by an even putt.
