HOLE 16 - DUNES
Although the dunes are interesting, there is not a great deal of natural change of elevation on this golf course so I have raised the tees on this hole to create height and also to establish a view over the thirteenth hole for which these tees can also be used.
The hole requires a heroic carry over the tee with three bunkers set into the ridge but the golfer can lay up or can play left where there are rolls in the fairway but no sand hazards. If he plays left his second shot is of increasing difficulty and part of the green will slope away from him so that a long iron will not hold. If the fairway bunkers are successfully carried and the ridges avoided however a good second shot will find the green.
The green is plateau’d and a run-up shot is not possible but the fairway is lined with mounds so that the ball will stay in play, somewhat like a billiard table which helps the high handicapper on this rather long straight hole. With the wind behind in the afternoon the hole is much easier.
The numerous flanking mounds are designed as spectator mounds, an idea we first pioneered at Muirfield Village, Jack Nicklaus’ home course.
