HOLE 1 - STARTERS
The first hole on a golf course is the introduction to the course. To many players, it is their first view of the course on their first visit. We expect this first acquaintance to be pleasant and hospitable, warm and friendly, exhibiting some of the character of the course without being too formidable. The golfer may not have had much time if any on the practice range, he may be cold, his muscles will almost certainly be as yet unprepared for sudden bursts of strenuous exercise.
So the first hole is a warm up hole, a par four of medium length to get the golfer going- not too short to slow up play, and not too difficult to spoil his round.
The first hole is not only the introduction to the course, it is also the introduction to the architect, to his mind and manner, his personality and idiosyncrasies. We both hope you will like us and will discover the different aspects to our characters as the golf course unfolds before you as a green carpet in a mansion. For on this first day each golfer is at the centre of the world, embarking on what should be one of the best days of his life.
There are no fairway bunkers on this first hole. A drive will set up the second shot to an open green. The green is bunkered to increase the difficulty only during tournaments. A birdie is possible to start the round as well. A par can be reasonably expected.
